Inconsistency in Image block settings if it is inside Row, Stack or Grid block #69997

Open

Description

@arunsathiya

Description

The Image Block is resizable from block settings and by dragging on the sides by default. This also works if the Image block is inside the Group block.

However, if you change the Group block to Row, Stack or Grid block, these properties will disappear, making it difficult to customize the image block when inside it.

Step-by-step reproduction instructions

  • On page or post editor, add Image block.
  • Observe you can adjust image size from settings and by dragging on the corners.
  • Add Image block in Group block, these features are still available.
  • Convert the Group block to Row, Stack or Grid to observe that these features are no longer available.

Screenshots, screen recording, code snippet

This issue is reproducible both on Gutenberg 20.6.0 and Gutenberg 20.7.0. I haven't tested if this is happening with the earlier versions of the plugin.

    The issue is not reproducible with Gutenberg that ships with the core WordPress software.

    Hi @arunsathiya, Thanks for reporting the issue. I can confirm that I can reproduce the issue with gutenberg active but not without it.

    I am running bisect to find the bad commit that introduced this regression.

    following commit might be the cause for this: d2e36e3

    Omitting size controls of Image block when inside flex layouts.
    I don’t think there’s as strong a reason to do this but I tried it because the size controls seem likely to be confusing in flex layouts. ##68666

    It was intentional change for flex layouts. I think.

    The limiting "dimension tools" looks like an intentional choice for some layouts. Initially introduced in #62891.

    Coming from #74972 . I'm facing this issue with all of my WP installations, has been like this for long time and it is still like this with latest 6.9.

    Adding bug report from that another thread:

    Description

    If image is added to row (for example to make a logo gallery with links - row works better than gallery block) the image cannot be resized.

    Image within Row block, cannot resize:
    Image

    Image not within Row block resize works fine:
    Image

    Step-by-step reproduction instructions

    1. Add row
    2. Add image to row
    3. Choose an image
    4. No resize handles, right panel has no width, height adjustment.

    @cbirdsong

    I also just ran into this while laying out a set of logos. You can work around it by resizing the logos while the parent block is in group mode, and once you change it over to row mode the changes stick. It's very confusing and unintuitive that you need to jump through all these hoops, though.
