Dollie Site Companion

Description

Dollie is a workspace where your team and its Agents plan and coordinate work. A Site Record in Dollie represents one website. This plugin connects a WordPress site to its Site Record and answers Dollie’s requests for information about the site.

Once connected, Dollie can read:

  • Site details — name, tagline, site icon, WordPress and PHP versions, language, time zone, whether a WordPress update is available, and counts of published posts, pages, users and comments.
  • Software — installed plugins and themes with their versions, which are active, and which have updates available. Update information comes from what WordPress already knows; the plugin does not check for updates itself.
  • Recent activity — a history the plugin keeps on this site: plugins and themes installed, updated, activated, deactivated or deleted; WordPress updates; posts and pages saved, trashed or deleted; changes to a short list of site settings; users added, updated or deleted; administrator logins. Each entry names the WordPress user who made the change.
  • WordPress abilities — on WordPress 6.9 and later, the abilities that other plugins on this site mark as public for MCP. Dollie can run one of these only as the administrator who connected the site, and only while that user is still an administrator.

Dollie asks for this information when your team or an Agent needs it. The plugin does not send anything on a schedule and makes no outgoing requests of its own.

Preview inside Dollie

A connected site can be shown in Dollie’s work panel next to the Agent. The plugin allows only the Dollie address the site was connected to to show it in a frame, and only for pages opened from Dollie’s preview. The preview shows the site as whoever is signed in to WordPress in that browser; it never signs anyone in. If you are not signed in, a bar offers to sign you in inside the preview. Some browsers block sign-in inside a frame; in that case, open the site in a new tab from the panel.

What this plugin does not do

It does not host, back up, update, secure or monitor your site, and it does not run commands on it. Those stay with your hosting and maintenance providers.

Installation

  1. Install and activate the plugin from Plugins > Add New, or upload the zip under Plugins > Add New > Upload Plugin.
  2. In Dollie, open the Site Record for this website and choose Connect. You can also start from Settings > Dollie on this site.
  3. WordPress asks you to approve an Application Password for Dollie. Approve it while signed in as an administrator.
  4. Dollie pairs the site and deletes the Application Password. Settings > Dollie then shows the Workspace and Site Record the site is connected to.

FAQ

How does the connection work?

You approve a WordPress Application Password once. Dollie uses it to pair the site, then deletes it. If Dollie cannot delete it, the Site Record says so; you can remove it yourself under Users > Profile > Application Passwords.

Pairing gives the site its own token. The plugin stores only a SHA-256 hash of that token, and Dollie’s requests must present the token to be answered. Settings > Dollie never shows it.

How much history is kept?

Up to 90 days, and at most the newest 10,000 entries. Older entries are deleted on this site. Dollie keeps the entries it has already read in the Site Record.

Does the history start before the site is connected?

Yes. The plugin records activity from the moment it is activated, so the first connection can include recent history.

How do I disconnect?

From the Site Record in Dollie: Dollie stops using the connection and asks the site to delete it. If the site cannot be reached, Dollie stops immediately and shows that the site was not told.

From Settings > Dollie: the connection is deleted on this site, so Dollie’s requests are refused from then on. Disconnect the Site Record in Dollie as well.

Either way the plugin stays installed, and the history Dollie already read stays in the Site Record. To connect again, run Connect again; it needs a new approval.

What happens when I deactivate or delete the plugin?

While the plugin is deactivated, Dollie’s requests to the site fail; activating it again restores the connection. Deleting the plugin removes its history table, the connection and its other settings. It does not touch your content, plugins, themes or users.

Why does the preview ask me to sign in?

Browsers do not send your WordPress login into a site shown inside another site unless the login was made there. Signing in from the preview’s bar creates a login that works inside the frame. This needs HTTPS. Safari and browsers that block third-party cookies may ask for permission first, or may not allow it at all; use Open in new tab instead.

Which abilities can Dollie use?

Only abilities registered through the WordPress Abilities API (WordPress 6.9 and later) that their plugin marks as public for MCP. Below WordPress 6.9, Dollie reports abilities as unavailable.

Is multisite supported?

The plugin can be activated on individual sites in a network. Each site connects separately. Multisite has not been tested.

Which external service does this plugin use?

Dollie (getdollie.com, or the Dollie address your team uses). Connect from Settings > Dollie sends your browser to Dollie with this site’s address. After pairing, Dollie requests the information listed above from this site’s REST API.

I've been using Dollie for a long time now and what I can say is that this plugin is top-notch. It deploys new Wordpress websites in seconds and has tons of features. You can easily resell Wordpress hosting to anyone and it gets 5+ stars from me!

We've used Dollie since it was in beta to add hosting services for our clients. We're operating in a specific niche (Community Websites) and thought we could deliver something extra for our customers not offered by large hosts. With Dollie we launched our platform in about a month and it's been running like a dream for over 2 years now. Customers manage their sites directly from our WordPress installation, and we charge them every month through WooCommerce Subscriptions. We've added a bunch of upsells (client reports and security scans via ManageWP) that compliment our hosting and this has worked very well for us. It really took us a bit of time to wrap around the concept, but in the end we could not be happier how things have turned out. Thanks Dollie Team for all the help with building our platform 🙂
