When the money is owed to the Bank (and not to another player) all of their properties are auctioned in turn (providing two or more players are still in the game)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If several players wish to <strong>buy houses or hotels but there are not enough left<\/strong> in the Bank, they will be auctioned<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If a player lands on the <strong>Auction space<\/strong> in <a href=\"https:\/\/geni.us\/cAtNk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"431\">Monopoly: The Mega Edition<\/a> <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you\u2019re playing the <strong>house rule \u2018Forced Auction\u2019<\/strong> then any time you land on an unowned property an auction begins immediately \u2013 you can\u2019t buy one outright.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"0-how-does-auctioning-work-in-monopoly\">How does auctioning work in Monopoly?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In Monopoly, auctioning works by having players take turns to bid on an unowned property. Any property space \u2013 including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.monopolyland.com\/monopoly-utilities\/\" data-lasso-id=\"432\">utilities<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.monopolyland.com\/monopoly-railroads\/\" data-lasso-id=\"433\">railroads<\/a> \u2013 can be auctioned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>When an auction is initiated, players bid on the property until everyone has decided they don\u2019t want to bid anymore. When that happens, the player with the highest bid wins the property.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This means that, if you\u2019re an aggressive bidder, you could pick up a lot of properties early in the game, but also burn through your cash stockpile quickly too. It\u2019s important to balance buying up property with keeping enough money to pay any fines or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.monopolyland.com\/buying-houses-rules\/\" data-lasso-id=\"434\">buy houses and hotels<\/a> later when you need to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another benefit of auctions is that you can be really strategic and drive up the price of a property someone needs to complete a set. If the final property in a set ends up in an auction, you could try to keep up with bids for the person who needs it and make them pay potentially hundreds of dollars more than it\u2019s worth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, they might call your bluff and make you pay a high price \u2013 but then you might have stopped them from making a game-winning move still. There\u2019s a lot of strategy involved!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-base-3-color has-red-background-color has-text-color has-background wp-block-heading\" id=\"1-when-do-auctions-happen-in-monopoly\">How To Auction in Monopoly<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are no official rules on how to auction property in Monopoly. This isn&#8217;t covered at all in the Monopoly rule book!<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/www.monopolyland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Monoply-rule-book.jpg\" alt=\"Monopoly rule book\" class=\"wp-image-3809\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.monopolyland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Monoply-rule-book.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.monopolyland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Monoply-rule-book-300x188.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.monopolyland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Monoply-rule-book-768x480.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>So with that in mind, let\u2019s cover how an auction works in a normal game of Monopoly, and then let\u2019s look at how that works on a video game version of the board game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"3-board-game-version\">Board Game Version<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In a standard Monopoly board game, there is<strong> no turn order<\/strong> during an auction. Anyone can bid for the property in any order, and they can bid any price higher than the previous bid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That means that, unfortunately, there\u2019s no rule in place to stop bids increasing by $1 until eventually everyone gives in, although feel free to invent your own rules on minimum bid increments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once no one wants to go higher than the last bid, the auction is over and the highest bidder wins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"4-video-game-version\">Video Game Version<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In the online and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.monopolyland.com\/monopoly-video-games\/\" data-lasso-id=\"435\">video game versions of Monopoly<\/a>, the auction process is slightly different&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The price will start at $1 and then the player whose turn follows that of the person who started the auction will make their bid, either in increments of $1, $10, or $100.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alternatively, they can choose to pass, at which point they withdraw from the auction. Anyone can bid any amount to kick-start the real bidding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have the cash, it\u2019s always worth bidding at least the mortgage value of the property (half its value to buy). Otherwise, another player could win the property and just mortgage it immediately for a profit. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, let&#8217;s say that a railroad (worth $200) is put up for auction. If you were to buy this for $90, you could immediately mortgage it and receive $100, giving you a $10 profit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For this reason, after the initial $1 bid, players often jump straight into bidding 50% of the original price on the Title Deed card.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/www.monopolyland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/monopoly-cash-1-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3778\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.monopolyland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/monopoly-cash-1-2.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.monopolyland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/monopoly-cash-1-2-300x188.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.monopolyland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/monopoly-cash-1-2-768x480.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"6-mortgaging-to-pay-for-an-auction\">Mortgaging To Pay For An Auction<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One common cause of arguments in the game of Monopoly is over what happens when someone bids more cash than they possess in an auction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This isn&#8217;t written in the official Monopoly rules, and the answer depends on whether you are playing the board game or video game version.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"7-board-game-version\">Board Game Version<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.quora.com\/profile\/Kevin-Tostado\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"436\">Kevin Tostado<\/a>, director of the documentary,\u00a0&#8216;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.monopolydocumentary.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"437\">Under the Boardwalk: The MONOPOLY Story<\/a><\/em>&#8216;, during the 2009 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.monopolyland.com\/monopoly-world-championship\/\" data-lasso-id=\"438\">World Monopoly Championships<\/a>, the following auction rule was in place&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>&#8220;Once the auction concludes, the final bid is binding, which means that if the player does not have money to pay for the property, it is possible for them to have just gone bankrupt to the bank in the process of buying the property at auction. You cannot mortgage a property you just bought to pay for the said property, but you can mortgage another property that you already own, or make a trade&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"8-video-game-version\">Video Game Version<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>However, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.monopolyland.com\/play-monopoly-online-with-friends\/\" data-lasso-id=\"439\">Monopoly video games<\/a> do only allow players to bid any higher than the cash they already have. So in the Monopoly video game, you cannot mortgage property that you already own to pay for your auction win.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I suspect that the game developers were cutting corners by changing this rule slightly and hoping that nobody would notice.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/www.monopolyland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Monopoly-family2.jpg\" alt=\"family playing Monopoly\" class=\"wp-image-3779\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.monopolyland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Monopoly-family2.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.monopolyland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Monopoly-family2-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.monopolyland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Monopoly-family2-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"9-monopoly-auction-rules-with-two-players\">Monopoly Auction Rules With Two Players<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The rules for Monopoly auctions with only two players are exactly the same for auctions with more players. With a two-player auction, you&#8217;ll just be passing the bids back and forth until one of you withdraws.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This creates a major tactical advantage if your opponent is low on cash. If they have less money than the cost of a property to buy it, and you land on it, you should definitely consider sending it to auction to get it cheaper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you just bid the amount of cash your opponent has. They can\u2019t beat your bid, and so you\u2019ll win the property at a reduced price. Be careful though, because they could mortgage some existing property to pay for it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, they might not realize that this is an option. It\u2019s a potentially great way to complete a set.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s a catch though. If all properties are owned, you instead must move to the space on the board that would make you pay the highest rent when houses, hotels, and skyscrapers are accounted for \u2013 and then pay up that rent. Eek!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You definitely want to avoid this space if all properties are owned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"11-monopoly-auction-faqs-\">Monopoly Auction FAQs\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"schema-faq wp-block-yoast-faq-block\"><div class=\"schema-faq-section\" id=\"faq-question-1628603868260\"><strong class=\"schema-faq-question\">What happens if you can&#8217;t afford a property in Monopoly<\/strong> <p class=\"schema-faq-answer\">If you land on a Monopoly property and can&#8217;t afford to buy it, you could raise funds by mortgaging other properties or selling assets. Another option would be to auction the property and hopefully get it for a reduced price.<\/p> <\/div> <div class=\"schema-faq-section\" id=\"faq-question-1628601104257\"><strong class=\"schema-faq-question\">What happens if you win a Monopoly auction but can\u2019t afford to pay?<\/strong> <p class=\"schema-faq-answer\">If you win an auction in Monopoly that you can\u2019t afford, you can try to raise the funds by mortgaging other properties, selling houses, or trading. If you still can\u2019t pay then you are bankrupt and will lose.<\/p> <\/div> <div class=\"schema-faq-section\" id=\"faq-question-1628601217459\"><strong class=\"schema-faq-question\">Who starts auctions in Monopoly?<\/strong> <p class=\"schema-faq-answer\">In a regular game of Monopoly, anyone can start the bidding. The auction is technically held by whoever is the banker for the game. In the video game versions, the players whose turn it would be next, after the player who initiated the auction, starts the bidding.<\/p> <\/div> <div class=\"schema-faq-section\" id=\"faq-question-1628601264590\"><strong class=\"schema-faq-question\">Where does the bidding start in Monopoly?<\/strong> <p class=\"schema-faq-answer\">Bidding in a Monopoly auction starts at $1. There is no official starting price set in the rules, and so you start from the lowest possible amount in the game.
