Oran R @RT04167310 7h Its hard not to love Sigourney Weaver as Ripley, and her performance is as solid as ever, as with the other actors. The dialogue is good too, as well as the cinematography. The problem is the plot and the pacing. The movie just lacks the kinds of hysterical terrifying extremes as the first two movies. The idea here in 'Resurrection' should have us sitting on the edge of our seats just terrified about what's coming next - which it doesn't. Though I still rewatch this movie now and again, I see the beginnings of (dear lord) Alien: Earth even in Alien : Resurrection, which is a real pity. A great idea that became a missed opportunity. If Alien 3 felt unnecessary, this feels almost pointless, especially because bringing Ripley back weakens the one decision that gave the previous film real meaning. The strange visual palette, forgettable characters and constant attempts at humor make it feel closer to an accidental comedy than horror. Winona Ryder gives the film some humanity, Ron Perlman genuinely made me laugh, and I appreciate the return to practical creature effects. Unfortunately, almost everything else feels misguided, especially the grotesque human and alien hybrid and a climax that completely destroyed my suspension of disbelief. Yeah, that’s this film. The script deserved better, but still lacks a powerful story or critique. The acting was campy and/or mediocre, detracting from the seriousness of the first Alien installment, with the sole exception of Weaver’s consistently solid work. You’d expect better with this cast, but Jeunet emphasized look and feel over performances, and it shows. Which might be okay in a horror film if the look and feel actually built tension instead of a nagging question about what happened to soap, lights, and color in the future. The biggest failing of the picture, though, is the lameness of the monsters. The Xenomorphs have been getting less worrisome over the franchise, so I get adding something new, but the hybrid was…uninspired. It just looks like ET didn’t handle puberty well and its emo ending was overly contrived.
