Summary

  • Adds a size-aware image_quality field to the attachment REST response so client-side media processing honors the wp_editor_set_quality and jpeg_quality filters
  • @wordpress/upload-media uses the filtered quality when resizing and transcoding sub-sizes (and the threshold-scaled copy), instead of the hardcoded DEFAULT_OUTPUT_QUALITY
  • Mirrors the existing image_output_format / image_save_progressive / exif_orientation pattern: per-file image-processing decisions live in the per-attachment upload response where the real filename, output MIME type, and dimensions are available

WordPress core backport: WordPress/wordpress-develop#11856

Approach

Gutenberg_REST_Attachments_Controller::prepare_item_for_response() resolves the output MIME type the same way core's WP_Image_Editor::set_quality() does (after image_editor_output_format), then applies wp_editor_set_quality (and jpeg_quality for JPEG output) with that MIME type and:

  • the full image dimensions for default
  • each registered sub-size's dimensions, reporting it under sizes only when the filtered value diverges from default (keeps the payload small)

wp_editor_set_quality has been size-aware since WP 6.8 (( int $quality, string $mime_type, array $size )).

The client converts the 1-100 WordPress scale to the 0-1 scale the vips worker expects, applies it per sub-size resize/transcode, and falls back to the previous default when the field is absent (older Core).

Example filter usage

Both of these standard core filters now flow through to client-side sub-size generation via the new image_quality field. The same code that tunes server-side image quality works unchanged.

With the first filter active the REST response reports "image_quality": { "default": 82, "sizes": { "thumbnail": 60 } }, and the client encodes the thumbnail at 0.60 while keeping other sizes at 0.82.

Test plan

  • Upload an image; verify image_quality.default is 82 (JPEG) with empty sizes and no behavior change
  • Add a size-aware wp_editor_set_quality filter (e.g. lower quality for thumbnails) and verify the per-size value appears in the REST response and is used when generating sub-sizes
  • Add a jpeg_quality filter and verify it shifts image_quality.default for JPEG output
  • Verify a image_editor_output_format JPEG→WebP filter shifts default to the WebP default (86)

Media: Return wp_editor_set_quality value in the upload response

Client-side media processing encoded sub-sizes and threshold-scaled
images at a hardcoded quality (DEFAULT_OUTPUT_QUALITY), bypassing the
wp_editor_set_quality filter so server-side quality tuning had no effect.

Add a size-aware image_quality field to the attachment REST response,
mirroring the image_output_format / image_save_progressive pattern. The
filter is resolved against the output MIME type for the full image and
re-applied per registered sub-size, reporting only sizes whose quality
diverges from the default. upload-media consumes this when resizing and
transcoding sub-sizes, falling back to the previous default when the
field is absent (older Core).

Media: Honor jpeg_quality and bound the image_quality schema.

Mirror the upstream REST changes in the compat controller: resolve the
reported quality through core's wp_get_image_encode_quality() when
available, falling back to an inline mirror of
WP_Image_Editor::set_quality() that now also applies the jpeg_quality
filter for JPEG output on older WordPress.

Bound the schema integers to 1-100 and enumerate the registered
sub-sizes under "sizes" so the schema documents exactly which keys may
appear.

The upstream feedback is addressed in WordPress/wordpress-develop#11856: jpeg_quality is now applied for JPEG output through a shared wp_get_image_encode_quality() helper, the schema integers are bounded 1-100, and sizes enumerates the registered sub-sizes.

Mirrored here in 0da2644 - the compat controller uses the core helper when available and falls back to an inline mirror of set_quality() (now including jpeg_quality) on WordPress versions that predate it. Ready for a proper review when you have a chance.

The inline get_image_encode_quality() fallback ran the range check
directly on the filtered value, relying on PHP's loose comparison when a
filter returned a non-numeric string. Add the is_numeric() guard the
canonical wp_get_image_encode_quality() helper uses so a non-numeric
value resets to the per-format default before the range check.

Call it a premonition :)

I'm planning on introducing this as a helper function in WordPress/wordpress-develop#11856. I can improve the doc block here with a reference so its clearer. I believe this code runs even under 7.1 when the plugin is active so this would use the core logic.

Clarify that wp_get_image_encode_quality() is the helper proposed in
wordpress-develop#11856, so the function_exists() guard reads as
forward-compat rather than a reference to a non-existent function.

Media: Align encode-quality helper with core review feedback

Apply Weston's suggestions from the review and mirror the minor
robustness changes he amended to the core counterpart
(WordPress/wordpress-develop#11856) so the two stay in sync:

- Accept the PHPStan-typed docblock on the encode-quality helper and
  add native type hints, renaming the parameter to $mime_type to match
  the core wp_get_image_encode_quality() signature.
- Cast get_post_mime_type() to string and clamp the full-size
  dimensions to non-negative ints before deriving quality.
- Add the out-of-range reset comment and drop the redundant int cast on
  return so the inline fallback mirrors core exactly.
