What?

Routes very large images, especially interlaced/progressive JPEGs, to server-side processing instead of attempting client-side processing that exceeds the wasm-vips memory cap and fails.

Addresses feedback in #76756 (the flower.jpg report: 20000×11857px interlaced JPEG failing with unable to call VipsForeignSaveJpegTarget).

Why?

wasm-vips is hard-capped at 1 GiB of WASM memory (kleisauke/wasm-vips#106). A high-megapixel image needs roughly width × height × 4 bytes for its decoded buffer plus working memory for the encode step, so very large images can exhaust the cap and fail to process. This is especially common for interlaced/progressive JPEGs (and Adam7 PNGs), which cannot be decoded with shrink-on-load and so must be buffered in full.

As @kleisauke noted and @ozgursar reported, the same image uploads fine through the normal media library (server-side) path, which has no comparable per-image memory ceiling.

How?

  • Add getImageDimensions() — a lightweight header parser that reads an image's width, height, and interlaced flag from the first 512 KB of the file (no full decode, no vips worker spin-up). Supports JPEG (SOF0/1 baseline vs SOF2/6/10/14 progressive) and PNG (Adam7 interlace byte), the formats most affected; other formats return null and keep the current behavior.
  • Add exceedsClientProcessingMemory() in feature-detection.ts, estimating the decoded buffer (W × H × 4) against a memory budget:
    • Interlaced/progressive: ~0.5 GiB (must be buffered whole).
    • Baseline: ~0.9 GiB backstop (vips shrinks-on-load, so peak memory is far lower).
  • In prepareItem(), probe vips-supported images and, when the estimate exceeds the budget, route the upload down the existing server-side path (generate_sub_sizes: true). Fully transparent to the user — no error, no notice; the server produces all sub-sizes.

If dimensions can't be determined, the image stays on the client-side path (no behavior change).

Testing Instructions

  1. Enable client-side media processing (Chromium 137+).
  2. Upload a very large interlaced/progressive JPEG (e.g. the 20000×11857 flower.jpg from Client Side Media iteration for WordPress 7.1: stabilization, docs, and Core backports #76756). Previously this failed with an OOM error; now it uploads and generates sub-sizes via the server.
  3. Upload a normal-sized image and confirm it still processes client-side (sub-sizes generated in the browser, e.g. AVIF output where configured).
  4. Confirm a moderately large baseline JPEG still processes client-side.

progressive JPEGs, which cannot be decoded with shrink-on-load and so
must be buffered in full.

Probe an image's dimensions and interlacing from its header bytes (no
full decode, no vips worker) and, when the estimated decoded buffer
would exceed a safe fraction of the cap, route the upload to server-side
processing instead. The server has no comparable per-image ceiling, so
these images upload and generate sub-sizes normally. Images whose
dimensions can't be determined keep the existing client-side path.

A tighter ~0.5 GiB budget is applied to interlaced images and a generous
~0.9 GiB backstop to baseline images.

Good idea! While this adds an extra processing step, it's way better to make sure we can process and defer to the server-side upload for large fails than have users encounter errors, so this seems like a good path forward to me.

Confirmed that the flower image uploads as expected on this branch, and other images continue to be processed client-side.

LGTM! (Also just an aside I'll be AFK for the first bit of next week, so might be a little slow to respond until mid-week)
