This mainly exist to relax the rules from the package so things like 123 456 and 123456 still pass

Generate the postcode rules into a PHP file from the postcode-validator package and ship them to the client through country data, so the server, the Checkout block, and the shortcode checkout all use the same patterns. - Replace i18n/postcode-validation-rules.json with a generated PHP file. - Make separators optional in place instead of stripping them, so a postcode is accepted with or without them, but only where the format allows one. - Add the woocommerce_postcode_validation_rules filter. - Validate the postcode field in the shortcode checkout. - Move postcode-validator to a dev dependency; it is only needed to generate the rules.

Hey @senadir!
Thank you for the PR 💯 I like where this is going. Having a canonical source of truth for all postcode handling is the right thing to do. I noticed a few things while testing, so I'd like to start the discussion with those:
- Compared to
trunk, where onlyLVand a few other postcode formats tolerated country code, now most (all?) postcodes do, so something likeUS90210is valid. I'm not sure we should accept those values, but if we do, at the very least the country code should be removed. Otherwise, those postcodes will no longer match most tax/shipping rules.
For example, if I create a tax for theUS,CAand postcode90210, enteringUS90210in the checkout form will process the order with no tax. Ontrunkthe postcode would be considered invalid, so you'd have to enter90210(correct). - Related to the above, allowing country code also results in some nonstandard formatting on order screens:

- I have some concerns growing from our currently handcrafted list of supported postcodes to the 186 rules without an audit. I'm not sure we can blindly trust upstream in this case. For example, some countries (
SV,AD,BB, ...) now require a mandatory prefix where previously we didn't. Others, likeCOdon't allow91...postcodes, which are valid.
This wasn't a problem ontrunkbut it is now due to the upstream rules.
Something similar happens for Portugal, where the standard isNNN-NN(whichtrunkcorrectly validated) and nowNNNNis also accepted. - The combination of
wc_format_postcode()with some of the new rules produces strange results: the now-accepted rule for Portugal will let you enter a 4 digit postal code and it'd be wrongly formatted asNNNN-.
The above makes me wonder if we can really trust the upstream data. As such, maybe we could start with a postcodes.php that matches exactly the rules we currently have on trunk, ship the unification of postcode handling and grow the list from there? Feels risky to adopt 186 rules (as opposed to the few dozens we currently have) without an audit or at least being certain we won't break anything that currently works?
Let me know what you think. Also, I know I'm a bit late to this, so if @tjcafferkey wants to take over or provide an additional review, that's obviously more than fine 😄.

@senadir @jorgeatorres, I would be grateful if you could consider one small addition here whenever your time allows. Nigeria launched a new national postcode system on 1 October, and this branch does not accept the new codes yet because it pins |
- Read Google's postal prefixes in the generator and add back the prefixes and formats that older versions accepted. - Restore the Eircode check for Ireland. - Send rules to the browser only for countries the store sells or ships to, and none when a woocommerce_validate_postcode callback exists. - Move the shortcode checkout check into PostcodeValidation and keep the old rules behind woocommerce_experimental_extensive_postcode_rules.

@senadir, thank you for the update to this branch. I see it now builds its rules from Google's address data, so my earlier request about the Google's entry for Nigeria is still Would you welcome an NG entry in NG: '[0-9]{6}|[A-Z]{2}[0-9]{2}[A-Z0-9]{3}[A-Z]{2}[0-9]{2}',The generator already stops with "The NG override matches Google; remove it" once Google's data carries the same rule, so the entry would not outlive its need. I am glad to open a small pull request against this branch with the entry and its tests, or to leave it with you if you prefer. |
Changes proposed in this Pull Request:
This PR builds from a previous PR that tried to unify postcode validation between server and client, and take it a step further by making the whole system unified, and making the build more frequent.
