.hack//Sign

A young wavemaster, only known by the alias of Tsukasa, wakes up in an MMORPG called The World, with slight amnesia. He does not know what he has previously done before he woke up. In The World, the Crimson Knights suspects him of being a hacker, as he was seen accompanying a tweaked character in the form of a cat. Unable to log out from the game, he wanders around looking for answers, avoiding the knights and other players he meets along the way.

As Tsukasa explores The World, he stumbles upon a magical item that takes the form of a "guardian," which promises him protection from all harm. Subaru, the leader of the Crimson Knights, along with several other players who became acquainted with Tsukasa, set out to investigate why Tsukasa is unable to log out, and attempt to get to the bottom of the problem before it gets out of hand.

This show was one the first anime I watched growing up after seeing big staples on Toonami on Cartoon Network along with the likes of Outlaw Star, Last Exile, Dragonball Z, and Gundam Wing. As such it holds a special place in my heart and still to this day has some of the most unique character and class designs. The wave master with their staff and a little orb floating inside being one of the most iconic to me along with the various tattoos.

The basic premise of a person's consciousness being stuck in a virtual MMORPG and being unable to log out and yet interact ... with everyone else who could log out was a unique and really interesting draw to me in the early 2000's. As the show goes on you learn more about the other characters in the show as they are introduced and their motives. Are they trying to help, hinder, torment, or otherwise use Tsukasa for some nefarious purpose? Who the good and bad guys are vs. how they are perceived by Tsukasa is another situation entirely. Is Tsukasa actually just a teen filled with angst and trying to overcome personal problems or is there something more? As the show goes on there are more questions that show up and even after you finish the show you may be left with some lingering questions even after a second viewing.

By today's standards, .Hack//Sign may not be the most flashy and exciting thing, especially when drawing sometimes unavoidable compares to other shows like Log Horizon or Sword Art Online, but the characters are well written and the universe is very enjoyable. So, if you are a fan of anime that revolve that feature fantasy video games with heavily then you'll enjoy this one.

If you end up wanting more there is plenty more where this came from, .Hack//Sign is part a larger project called the ".Hack Project" by CyberConnect2. Other parts of the .Hack Project that you can consume to complement/enhance your experience with this anime, include 3 other anime projects, a tetralogy of PS2 games, and 5 light novels. Consumption of these other companion anime, games, and light novels are not required to understand all the key points of this anime, but playing the PS2 games and watching the OVA that came with them (Liminality) will fill in any potential blanks. They are also a good source of expanding your knowledge of the .hack universe if you find yourself wanting more after finishing .Hack//Sign like I did. One of the draws that I love about .Hack//Sign and the .Hack universe as a whole is how interconnected everything is. It encourages you to consume multiple types of media to get various aspects of the overall lore and story of the universe.

Mixed Feelings

.hack is one of those animes where everything is separated into different locations, animes, games, mangas, novels, etc. However, the anime is not an adaptation of these other contents, but rather a complement, which makes people who know the universe more immersive in the story.

A highlight not only of this, but of the entire franchise, is its soundtrack, easily becoming an album to listen to while working or doing other tasks.

The anime is focused entirely on the narrative, with combats being "complementary". I would recommend watching it if, for some reason, you are interested in the franchise, that is, watching the other animes, playing the ... games, etc., otherwise it may be boring to watch.

This anime's plot asks a lot from you and doesn't give anything back. It's abusive, cheap, and cynically manipulative. The music carries the show. It simply does not deserve to have music this good, but somehow it's there and they take advantage off it. I can almost see a producer thinking, "Wow, this music is great. We can just have people look at a static image and call it a day." Over half the animation team phoned it in and went out to get drunk, while one guy stayed behind to actually make a few characters move here and there.

Back when this first came out, ... I was very interested because I like video games and virtual environments and slow-burning philosophical stories that give me plenty of time to think, but .hack//Sign does not ask you to think. It asks you to be retarded. I had all kinds of questions I wanted answered but the show didn't give me any hints or indication that it was moving forward towards any solution. It either wanted me to shut up or imagine everything up myself.

What do you mean you can't "log out?" Don't you have to eat? Drink? Sleep? Well, maybe he's in a coma at a hospital hooked up to some experiment. Okay, then, how does this game work? They wire it directly into your brain? Then, the outside word and its technologies, along with its social structure, are way more interesting than the game, but we learn nothing about any of that. We learn one of the characters works at a video rental store. Let me point that out again. A VIDEO RENTAL STORE. Who runs this game, anyway? What company? No one ever talks about it. No one ever mentions reading articles about the game or following any updates or changes. And all throughout the 26-episode series you have characters questioning the stakes, asking themselves where anything that happens in the story really matters, because it's just a game to them, which they only use as a sort of chat room.

There's no action. That's fine. I'm not bothered by that. There are entire episodes of people just talking one-on-one. Static images on screen for five minutes at a time. No biggie. It's like watching a visual novel, and I've done that before, but even by visual novel standards, there's no action. Not only do you seldom see anyone doing anything, but hardly does anyone talk about anything they've done.

So, I dropped it hard, like a quarter century ago, but it became a multimedia franchise that is still going to this day. A lot has happened since then and I picked it up one more time because I had very strong sense of nostalgia for that era, before anyone had ever heard of Facebook or social media, web pages were made for 640x480 resolution, and we dreamed about technology changing things for the better. It transported me back for a while and the dull, plodding nature of the show gave me ample opportunity to be in that moment again.

Even so, I would not have done this without important assistive technology, like AR glasses that let me watch while getting some exercise or going on a hike. Very little attention is needed on the screen and the music is nice, so why not go for a walk? And, hey, isn't it kind of cool? I'm watching an old show about people wearing VR headsets on my AR headset. Radical.

Still a dumb show. I'm glad I got to hear more of the music. Every now and then it presented a scene that was nice to look at it, like whoever drew it felt bad that someone was going to have to look at it for five minutes, and so they put their best foot forward. Every now and then, you get one of those guys, who at least seems to care.

Tom, the host of Toonami, called the show "confusing" during a review for the PS2 game, after they aired the episodes for only a month. Let me tell you, when the network that airs the show is speaking apologetically about it, it's a BAD show.

One last thing, which is uplifting. If you have an idea for a story, then .hack//Sign is proof that you should write it and get it out there. No matter how bad it is, there's a good chance it'll succeed and turn into a decades-long franchise because that's what happened here. Don't let your dreams die. You can do better. I'm positive.
