Naruto: Shippuuden

It has been two and a half years since Naruto Uzumaki left Konohagakure, the Hidden Leaf Village, for intense training following events which fueled his desire to be stronger. Now Akatsuki, the mysterious organization of elite rogue ninja, is closing in on their grand plan which may threaten the safety of the entire shinobi world.

Although Naruto is older and sinister events loom on the horizon, he has changed little in personality—still rambunctious and childish—though he is now far more confident and possesses an even greater determination to protect his friends and home. Come whatever may, Naruto will carry on with the fight for what is important to him, even at the expense of his own body, in the continuation of the saga about the boy who wishes to become Hokage.

Coming from Naruto and the way it ended, I had some hopes for the next major part, Shippuden. If I had to describe it briefly, it has much higher highs than OG Naruto but also had lower lows than it as well.

To start with the characters, it was a bit of a downgrade for me. Some of the main cast I still enjoyed, Naruto and Sasuke were good. Kakashi got much more development here, and I loved it. Other characters like Jiraiya and Tsunade were also still great. So what was my issue here?

The side characters were completely washed away and felt like the ... side characters that did have screen time in the OG Naruto were just sidelined. To give two examples, Neji and Lee were just blank here. There are many more instances of side characters being boring and just being a major downgrade, especially when we essentially had a whole arc dedicated to a few side characters in the OG Naruto (Sasuke Retrieval Arc).

The story was less consistent than the story in OG Naruto but had story beats that definitely beat OG Naruto. To get the negative ones out the way, The Tenchi Arc and the War Arc stand out as just being either very boring or just too slow paced for me. On the flip side, there are arcs like the Sasuke vs Itachi arc that I really enjoy because it felt like many things paid off here particularly with the mystery elements. There is also the Pain Arc which I believe is the best arc of the entirety of Naruto, just so good!

While Orochimaru was the main antagonist of OG Naruto, here there are much more variety like the Akatsuki and Obito who I enjoyed their presence and the threat they shown to everyone. Madara is another antagonist but honestly he felt pretty underdeveloped compared to the rest. Unfortunately, Orochimaru also felt shafted in this series and I missed the aura he had in the OG series.

The final fight between Naruto and Sasuke was great and really well animated, however I would say once the more grounded hand to hand combat stopped and we started to get to the giant Kaijus, I lost some interest. I also think another issue with this series is the insane power scaling from the first installment.

To end on a quick positive, there are some really standout characters like Pain, Kakashi and Shikimaru, as well as some really standout arcs that I love. I just believe it is mixed in with a lot of average and just bad qualities.

Mixed Feelings

Naruto Shippuden, being one of the big three, is not so good yet not so bad. It has some good sides and bad sides too, so I can't tell it a 'must watch anime' like most people do. Here's a breakdown:

Good sides:
1. It contains flashy action, especially Naruto vs. Sasuke fight, which makes this incredible.
2. Good Character development, many characters has grown better than the original series.
3. The backstories of the characters will make you cry, especially Naruto's parents and pain's backstory.
4. The animation is also good, compared to the era.
5. Naruto has the best opening songs of all time, you must check ... them out.

Bad sides:
1. The female characters is the biggest problem that was disturbing me. While other anime especially modern anime respects women and make them as strong as men, Naruto disrespects women. In the anime it is shown that women always chase romance. Indeed, they are all weak with a little character development. Even real life women are bold and stronger than them! So, I must say, The anime 'Naruto' doesn't understand and respect women.
2. The second is, Naruto's talking to the enemy for which he is mostly criticized. Because, you turn an evil into a good person just by talking to them, when they are doing evil deeds for years? This literally makes no sense.

After all, I'm saying this, that both Naruto and Naruto Shippuden is best for beginners, but it's not always the best.

I'll keep this short and sweet.

Loved Naruto back in the mid 2000s when it was hot on Toonami. Decided to pick it back up when Crunchyroll and Funimation were two separate streaming services. Managed to get through the first Naruto series, but man... after so much hype from streamers, word of mouth, and the blatant popularity backing this show, I should have been entertained, not bored stiff waiting for the story to pick up. I love a good time skip story, especially with a roster of amazing characters, but thats the major downfall. The character writing for this show is downright rushed and might ... as well be nonexistent with the female characters. There is an insane amount of filler and flashback that comes off as unnecessary, but the average normie would tell you that its "character development". Yeah, while that may be true, it certainly doesn't take a couple dozen episodes to tell one characters back story.

Easily THE most overrated shounen anime of all time, and mainly just a gateway anime to get you introduced to anime, and I still would recommend something like Dragon Ball Z, Bleach, One Piece, or something modern like MHA or Demon Slayer with better storytelling and characters, than I would ever recommend this garbage. And anyone who tells you otherwise has either just started watching anime or only watches what is mainstream instead of deep-diving into anime as a whole.

Save your time and dedicate it to better anime than devoting to this lost cause that somehow has garnered popularity for whatever reason. There are anime that are a fraction of this overall runtime that have better engaging characters and a more captivating story.
